How To Get Targeted Website Traffic

More Website Traffic

More Web Traffic!

More Web Traffic!

How do you get more website traffic? That is a really good question! I wish I could say I am an expert at generating web traffic! I certainly know more about increasing traffic now than I did when I started my first website and I have learned a few things along the way. I wish I knew two years ago what I know now! In fact, I wish I knew two months ago what I know now! Getting traffic, especially targeted traffic, to your website is a lifelong learning project. I started this website so that small business owners would have an affordable resource to learn what I have learned, with the information presented in easy-to-understand terms. This is the second of several articles about increasing your website traffic.

Driving Website Traffic

There are many ways to drive traffic to your website, and the more of them that you utilize the more traffic you will get. I actually have a spreadsheet that I print and refer to monthly so that I do not miss any opportunities to drive new traffic to my sites. There are so many ways to generate web visitors that I do not want to forget to do something for more than a month. My goal is to do each item every month but of course that doesn’t always happen. I do not have a whole department in my home business dedicated to my internet presence. I wish that I did!

Cheap Website Traffic

Many techniques of driving web traffic can be very expensive. One way to get traffic to your site that is specific to your niche and very cheap, effective, and fun is to submit to blog carnivals. The carnivals give you niche-specific traffic, and you get to meet other bloggers who have similar interests. The carnivals are organized in a multitude of categories. I have seen everything from diet programs, politics, home schooling, and science fiction comic books and everything in between.

Targeted Visitors = Blog Carnivals Bring Visitors

The blog carnival is hosted by a website or by a few websites that take turns. Other bloggers submit their article URL for inclusion in the carnival, and then the host puts up the post or article with references and links to the various related articles. Not only do you, the submitting blogger, get targeted visitors, you also build incoming links. Even without the traffic, the incoming link will help SEO in the long run, which means more traffic in the end.

Blog Carnival Submissions Can Be A Website Traffic Generator

Put a routine into your business and submit to blog carnivals on a monthly basis. Create a system of generating regular visitors to your website through your blog submissions. The blog carnival website allows you to create lists of favorite carnivals. Pick carnivals that are in your niche and that are ongoing, then add them to your carnival favorites. Each month you can submit the same relevant URL to every carnival. They all won’t pick you up, but many will if your article fits and is interesting or seasonally appropriate. For example, in late December I submitted an article to about 15 blog carnivals that focus on healthy living, food or holiday entertainment.  The article was on “how to eat right at a party”. It was included in at least five of the carnivals that came out around the holidays that I know of.

I recently started two blog carnivals. One is a carnival of healthy living and the other is for home business tips. At first I was worried that I would not have enough submissions, since they were new carnivals, but that fear was unfounded. I had so many submissions that I could be picky about what to include. It seemed as though many of the articles that I received were just spam. So make sure that you read each carnival’s theme and submission guidelines if they have any. A relevant and interesting article will have better chances and also generate more traffic if accepted.

More Website Traffic Techniques

I will continue to share more techniques to bring traffic to your website or blog in the future. For now if you are new to this, the best thing to do is to be consistent. Everything that you can do to bring more traffic to your site takes time and has a learning curve as well. Once you master one system of generating web traffic, it will take less time than at first but it still takes time. Put a system into place so that you can continue on an ongoing basis, then add something else. If you work on mastering a couple of techniques at one time, then add more after you get good at the first couple, it will only be a matter of time until you start working from a spreadsheet too.

What Are Alt Tags?

Alt Image Tag

I noticed recently that I received more than a couple dozen visitors to my website through alt tags. An alt tag is the text that will show up on a web page if an image does not load or if it loads slowly. Short for ‘alternate tags’, the alt tag is an important aspect of your webpage for several reasons:

  • Alt tags show up if the picture does not.
  • Alt tags are visible if someone hovers over the picture with the mouse.
  • Alt tags are seen by search engines.
  • Alt tags will bring your picture into the top results on Google and other search engines.

Alt html Tag

This is what the html code looks like for an image that includes the alternate tag: scented candles

<a href=”http://howtobuildawebsitequick.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/romantic-candles.jpg”><img style=”border: 0pt none;” src=”http://howtobuildawebsitequick.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/romantic-candles-150×150.jpg” alt=”scented candleswidth=”150″ height=”150″ /></a>

When I first started working on the internet I had no knowledge of alternate tags. WordPress makes it really easy for a novice to do a good job of web design. The “insert” photo feature actually gives you the opportunity to enter your alternate tag into your picture. Since I did not know what it was at first I did not care nor did I take the time to learn what an alt tag was or why it was used. I now have a better understanding of the internet and realize that it is worthwhile to learn as you go because everything serves a purpose and gives your site more visibility.

scented candlesThis picture is tagged with “scented candles”. When you hover over it, you can see that. If for some reason the picture did not load on the page, then the alt tag would show up instead.

When you do a Google search for “scented candles?” notice which pictures come up. There is a good chance that these pictures are the ones that are tagged to match the keywords you just typed in.  If your company sells candles and you write a nice article about scented candles with key words about scented candles then any pictures on the page should use the keywords that match your article. Let’s say that you put a picture of a couple enjoying a romantic dinner with a candle in the middle of the table. The key word should say scented candles, not romantic dinner.

The alternate tags for the photos on a page should go along with or compliment the keywords on the page and they should also compliment the alt tag htmlpicture.  If I coded the picture of the candles with the key words alt tags html (like I did this one) then it would be spam.

When I first started using alt tags I had no clue what the purpose of the alternate tags was so I would have coded the candle picture as a romantic dinner rather than scented candles. Both are appropriate for the picture and for the article on candles.  If you want your picture to show up on Google for romantic dinner that is fine, but if you code it as scented candles, then some people may see it and actually come to your site through a picture or image link. (Anyway and every way they get to my site is good for me!)

Don’t Forget Your Alt Image Tags

After you take the time to pick good keywords for your article, then go one step further and add your keywords to your pictures by inserting the alternate tags.  In WordPress, after inserting the picture just re-click on the photo,  go to Advanced, then insert the alt tag.

Google Website Ranking – My Page Rank

Website Page Rank

Google assigns page rank on a scale of 0 – 10. Basically, nobody gets a 10. I have seen FaceBook ranked at an 9 and YouTube is ranked 9 as well. This is a ranking which indicates a website’s authority level, calculated by a complicated system of variables that only Google knows. In itself, the page rank does not mean too much. Combined with other factors it can mean a lot. Simply, any page rank means you are doing things right or at least partly right and your website is moving up in the world.

My Web Site Ranking

We built this website in January of 2009 and by November the site was receiving a page rank from Google of 0. Now you may say that doesn’t sound so great but it is better than the n/a, which is what comes before zero. N/A pretty much means that Google does not see you. So, I was pretty excited to see some ranking. Actually, one of my reasons for keeping the blog at WordPress was to see if I could in fact get a free hosted site ranked. The answer is yes. And it did not really take that long, especially considering that I did not do much with the site. No directory submissions, no link building to speak of, not much more than a weekly (at best) post that was crafted to be search engine friendly.

Increase Page Rank

Many people keep their blogs hosted for free forever. The reason why I chose to move the site to my own hosting service is because as it increases in page ranking, visitors and longevity the site will also increase in value. We moved because when the site is PR 5 or so, we may want to sell it.

Search Engine Rank

A website is like real estate. Over time, and if cared for properly, it will increase in search engine rank and therefore increase in value. A free hosted website belongs to the free host. You are only a renter. Any investment you make into your property is really increasing the value for your landlord, or the free hosting service. The WordPress search engine page rank is a PR 9 also. Leaving HowToBuildAWebsiteQuick on a free site is giving them another page with ranking.

If you are making investments into your website and doing a good job of content creation, then you may want to consider hosting it on a paid server so that you can sell it someday, or pass the asset on to your kids. There are many hosting services. The one I have found most economical and easy to work with is www.GoDaddy.com . Actually, I only have one hosting account and I host all seven of my websites on the same account. A hosting account will cost about $80.00 per year, or if you get the premium account that will host more than one domain, it is only about $140.

How To Build A Website Quick Will Increase Rank With Paid Hosting

Moving this site to a paid hosting service will further increase the Google page rank.  The reason I recommend that newbies to websites or blogging start with a free service like WordPress is because:

  • It is FREE!
  • WordPress is the most search engine-friendly of all blogging and website platforms
  • It is easy to learn
  • After learning WordPress it is easy to learn other site platforms.
Success on the internet takes time and commitment. Do not invest a ton of money until you are sure you are going to stick with it.

If after building your website you find that you are committed to it for the long haul and your site will accumulate in value, then it would be time to get a paid hosting service of your own to protect your asset and further increase your page ranking. WordPress Help: 717-751-2793

Web Page Layout

Design Your Web Page Layout

This eye tracker has been posted in my office next to the computer for quite some time.  I saved it and printed it out after finding it on Eyetrack III. -  a website that tracks online behaviors.  I have found this information to be fascinating and informative.

Website Eye Tracker

Where Do Visitors Look?

According to the folks at Eyetrack III your visitors look first at the upper left corner then scan to the right before looking down the page. You can use the coded color chart which is published on Eyetrack III and shown above to prioritize the information on your page whenever possible.

Free Website Hosting – Word Press

Word Press Free Website Hosting

Word Press provides free website hosting when your website is part of their free blogging format. This website is hosted for free on the Word Press hosting service. Free website hosting at Word Press and other blogging platforms has some limitations. For example, there is a possibility that some forms, shopping cart services and many auto-responders that utilize a form html code may not be embedded into the free format.

What Is Hosting?

The web host is a company who provides space on a server that gives your site connectivity to the internet. The internet terminology is not hard to comprehend. Think about the following terms in relationship to your home to get a better idea of what web hosting is.

  • Domain: The website domain name or url is your address.  In the world of cities, the url is like your street address so that the postman knows where to deliver you mail. This website’s domain is www.BuildrWeb.WordPress.com It is a Word Press domain and it is hosted for free on the Word Press hosting service.
  • The Internet/World Wide Web: is a big city.  The domain or url is the address within the city so that people know how to find you.
  • Host Service:  This is your house.  You build your website or build your house in a hosting service.  It is where you actually live.  This website is hosted for free by Word Press hosting service.
  • Forwarding Address:  I have this domain: www.HowToBuildAWebsiteQuick.com forwarded to another address because I did not build my own house on a paid service.  I used the FREE WordPress service as my house until I build my own so I have my mail forwarded to the other address. This web domain will be forwarded to the Word Press hosting service until I buy my own hosting service on a paid server.
