Long Tail Keywords Mean Fewer Searches, Less Competition
Long tail keywords are a series of words that make up a keyword choice. For example:
- On this article a couple of generalized keywords that I could assign to it are: keyword or keywords
- A long tail keyword for this article may be: long tail keywords or long tail keyword
- A really long tail keyword that is very specific would be: what are long tail keywords or what is a long tail keyword
What Is A Keyword?
A keyword or string of keywords are the words used to find pertinent information either in a filing cabinet, book, article or today most often referring to in a search engine. Keywords are what we type into the search bar of Google or Yahoo or any search engine and then the search engine tries to find the best match for your keyword.
The more keywords that you put in a string (before the comma) the more likely you will get an article that is exactly what you are looking for. Long tail keywords are specific and short keywords tend to bring up more general information. The longer the tail, the more specific the results and the less competition.
Bloggers Should Use Long Tail Keywords
As a blogger you should always add your meta keywords to your articles. More importantly, you should study and learn a bit about how to write and pick good keywords so that you get qualified traffic when your blog article shows up on page one. Long tail keywords will have fewer searches per month but also will have less competition.
Long Tail Keywords Have Less Competition
There is a tremendous amount of competition on the internet and using long tail keywords can bring you to the top. Using this article as an example and doing research on the keyword: “keyword” you will see that the Google search engine results are:
- keyword = About 414,000,000 results
- what is a keyword = About 311,000,000 results
- what are long tail keywords = About 752,000 results
The goal in picking your keywords is to find a good balance. We want keywords that actually get searched as well as ones that do not have as much competition. If you are spending time blogging, then you should also invest some time into learning more about keywords.

Great clarification on the proper use of keywords, now I just have to read the article on writing good keywords!
We are just getting started, don’t know much about what we are doing.
Figured out a while back “long-tail keywords” very important but could only find tangential references to the term.
For the first time we understand what they are and how we are going to start implementing them.
Thank’s so much!
